The Story of
the Loupe Shield
Three months into the Covid-19 lockdown, Dr. Scott Yamaoka reopens his Vancouver-based dental practice. With new risks of infections, he has to quickly search for high-quality PPE.
There are many face shields on the market, but none have enough clearance for his loupes. Frustrated, Dr. Yamaoka develops a new design from his garage. He cuts a safety helmet in half, glues 5 magnets onto the rim, and uses a piece of school supply plastic as the visor.
Feedback from his Dental colleagues is astoundingly positive. The shield even gets featured on National Television!
Seeing an opportunity to apply his skills as a design engineer to help dentists, Scott’s son Zach Yamaoka leaves his job at Dyson. Zach assembles a team, with university friend Dan and colleague Yatine, to further develop the face-shield.
